Love Potion No.9
Love Potion No.9
"Love Potion No. 9" is a timeless classic written by the legendary songwriting duo, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, in 1959. The song was initially performed by the Clovers, peaking at number 23 on both the US and R&B charts in the same year. In 1964, the Searchers recorded a version of the song that reached number three on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number two on Cash Box during the winter of 1965.
Other notable versions of the song include Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass's instrumental version on their 1965 album Whipped Cream and Other Delights, and the Coasters' 1971 version with "D. W. Washburn" on the B-side. The latter reached No. 76 on the Billboard Pop chart and No. 96 on the Cash Box chart.
The song tells the story of a man seeking a love potion, with the help of a gypsy, to help him find love. The potion, an aphrodisiac, causes him to fall in love with everything he sees, eventually leading him to kiss a policeman on the street corner, who then breaks his bottle of love potion.
The Clovers used alternative lyrics in the LP release of the song, with the ending lines: "I had so much fun that I'm going back again, I wonder what'll happen with Love Potion Number Ten?" This version was featured in the film American Graffiti and released on the LP version of the soundtrack, but replaced by the single version on the CD release. The song also inspired the 1992 film of the same name, starring Sandra Bullock and Tate Donovan.
Over the years, the song has been covered by various artists, including heavy metal band Tygers of Pan Tang, indie rock band The Wallies, and punk rock group The Queers, who included their version of the song on their 2021 album Reverberation. In addition, Rockapella has also covered the song. "Love Potion No. 9" continues to be a beloved classic, and its enduring popularity is a testament to the timelessness of its catchy melody and playful lyrics.
Lyric
I took my troubles down to Madame Rue
You know that gypsy with the gold-capped tooth
She's got a pad down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
Sellin' little bottles of Love Potion Number Nine
I told her that I was a flop with chicks
I've been this way since 1956
She looked at my palm and she made a magic sign
She said "What you need is Love Potion Number Nine"
She bent down and turned around and gave me a wink
She said "I'm gonna make it up right here in the sink"
It smelled like turpentine, it looked like India ink
I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink
I didn't know if it was day or night
I started kissin' everything in sight
But when I kissed a cop down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
He broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine
I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink
I didn't know if it was day or night
I started kissin' everything in sight
But when I kissed a cop down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
He broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine
Love Potion Number Nine
Love Potion Number Nine
Love Potion Number Nine
